Chapter 11 - Voices That Returned

The following morning, investigators interviewed dozens of witnesses once again.
This time, people who had remained silent during the assault began sharing details they had previously withheld.
"I've seen those four around the subway."
"They followed older people."
"They always seemed to receive phone calls before leaving."
One bakery owner hesitated before speaking.
"There was another man."
Detective Morris immediately looked up.
"What did he look like?"
"He never talked to them directly."
"Did they know him?"
"I think so."
"Why?"
"They always looked around before he arrived."
Another witness added something unexpected.
"The old man noticed him."
Harold, who had been listening quietly from across the room, slowly nodded.
"I saw someone observing."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"I wasn't certain."
"You suspected he wasn't just another passerby?"
"Correct."
Samuel glanced toward Harold.
"You've become cautious."
Harold smiled faintly.
"Experience teaches patience."
The interviews continued throughout the afternoon.
As detectives compared statements, a pattern emerged.
The mysterious observer had appeared near several previous robberies involving elderly victims.
Never speaking.
Never interfering.
Always watching.
Meanwhile, technicians finally identified the route taken by the black sedan after leaving Harold's residence.
The vehicle had deliberately driven through underground parking garages, changed highways multiple times, and disappeared beneath a tunnel where surveillance coverage briefly ended.
Whoever organized the operation understood exactly how investigators worked.

That realization worried Detective Morris far more than the assault itself.
