Chapter 19 - Beneath the Warehouse

The echo rolled through the abandoned warehouse a second time.
Every member of the investigative team instinctively stopped moving.
No one spoke.
Dust drifted slowly through narrow beams of evening light while the metallic sound faded into silence once more.
Detective Elena Morris raised one hand, signaling everyone to remain where they were.
"Did anyone move downstairs?"
The officers exchanged quick glances.
"No."
"We've stayed together."
"The basement hasn't been entered."
Harold kept his eyes fixed on the reinforced steel door.
"They're still here."
Samuel looked toward him.
"You sound certain."
"I've heard that mechanism before."
"When?"
"Long ago."
He stepped closer until he stood only inches from the circular indentation built into the door.
"It wasn't designed to keep people out."
Elena frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"It was designed to delay them."
One of the structural engineers carefully examined the wall surrounding the entrance.
"This section doesn't match the rest of the building."
"Different construction?"
"Much newer steel."
He tapped the surface gently.
The sound was hollow.
"There appears to be another chamber behind it."
An officer returned from the rear corridor carrying a flashlight.
"Detective."
"What is it?"
"We found fresh footprints."
Everyone immediately followed him.
The prints crossed a thick layer of dust without interruption.
One person had entered.
Another had left.
Then several additional footprints overlapped the originals.
Some were only a few hours old.
Others appeared to have been made days earlier.
Elena crouched beside them.
"They've been returning."
"For what?"
Nobody answered.
At the end of the corridor lay a recently extinguished flashlight, abandoned beside an old concrete pillar.
Its batteries were still warm.
Whoever had dropped it could not have been far ahead.
The officers quietly spread through the lower level while Harold remained beside the steel door.
Samuel noticed the old man's expression.
"You remember something."
Harold nodded slowly.
"I remember promising never to come back."
"And yet here we are."
Harold rested one hand against the cold steel.
"Because someone else already broke that promise."
Before anyone could continue, Elena's radio crackled.
"Detective... we've found another room."
"Status?"
"It's empty."
"Completely?"
There was a pause.
"No."
Another voice replaced the first.
"There's a table."
"What else?"
"A projector."
"And..."
The officer hesitated.
"...someone has recently watched old film reels here."
Silence settled over the warehouse once again.
