Chapter 61 - The Keeper's Ledger

Late that evening, while everyone examined the newly recovered map, Arthur quietly asked Catherine to accompany him into the gallery's oldest archive room.
Neither Harold nor the detectives followed.
Arthur walked directly toward an antique writing desk standing beneath a stained-glass window.
"I hoped we'd never need this."
Catherine unlocked a hidden compartment.
Inside rested a thick ledger bound in dark green leather.
Unlike every previous record, every page contained signatures.
Not eight.
Not nine.
Hundreds.
Each signature represented someone who had quietly accepted responsibility for preserving one small part of history.
Teachers.
Doctors.
Librarians.
Photographers.
Archivists.
Journalists.
Firefighters.
Ordinary people.
No medals.
No titles.
Only names.
Arthur turned to the final completed page.
The last signature had been added only three weeks earlier.
Catherine recognized it immediately.
"Claire Donovan."
Arthur nodded.
"Benjamin prepared her."
"So the network never disappeared."
"It simply changed."
Harold entered the room just in time to hear the final sentence.
He slowly looked across the enormous ledger.
"I spent thirty years believing the Eight Promises ended with us."
Arthur smiled gently.
"They didn't."
"They became something larger."
Before Harold could respond, the emergency phone rang once more.
Marcus answered.
His expression changed instantly.
"Detective."
Elena looked up.
"What happened?"
"The storage locker in the other city..."
"...someone accessed it exactly twenty-three minutes ago."
"Who?"
Marcus lowered the receiver.
"The security system captured a clear face."
Everyone waited.
Marcus slowly turned the monitor toward Harold.
The surveillance image displayed an elderly man unlocking Locker E-17 with complete confidence.
Harold stared silently for several long seconds.
Finally he whispered,
"I attended his funeral."
The room fell completely silent.

Because the man smiling at the security camera...
...was Daniel.
