Chapter 16 - Location Seven

Detective Elena Morris carefully unfolded the aged map on the dining table. Time had yellowed the paper, and several folds looked ready to tear apart with the slightest pressure. A faded compass occupied one corner, while narrow handwritten notes filled the margins in neat block letters.
No street names appeared anywhere.
Instead, every destination was identified only by numbers.
Location One.
Location Three.
Location Five.
And finally...
Location Seven.
A red circle surrounded the final entry.
Samuel adjusted his glasses.
"I've seen this handwriting before."
Harold remained silent.
"You drew it."
"I did."
Elena traced one finger above the map without touching it.
"Why use numbers instead of actual places?"
Harold answered after a long pause.
"Because names can be remembered."
"And numbers?"
"They only matter to the people who already know the code."
Samuel slowly sat down.
"I thought every copy was destroyed."
"So did I."
The room fell into thoughtful silence.
Elena finally looked up.
"If someone has been searching for these records for thirty years..."
Harold nodded.
"Then they already understand what Location Seven represents."
"Do you?"
He looked toward the window.
"I remember where it was."
"Were?"
"The city has changed."
Roads had been widened.
Old factories demolished.
Entire neighborhoods rebuilt.
"It may not even exist anymore."
Before anyone could continue, Harold's security adviser entered carrying a tablet.
"We've identified the sedan."
Everyone turned toward him.
"It used cloned license plates."
"Driver?"
"No clear facial image."
"What about the route?"
The adviser enlarged a satellite map.
"The vehicle passed the same intersection three separate times."
Elena frowned.
"That makes no sense."
"It does if the driver wanted to confirm whether someone else was conducting surveillance."
Someone had not merely watched Harold.
May you like
Someone had been watching the watchers.
