Chapter 63 - Locker E-17
The storage company remotely sealed the entire floor before local officers arrived.
Locker E-17 remained open.
Daniel was gone.
There were no emergency exits beyond the monitored staircase, yet no camera showed him leaving the building.
Inside the locker stood dozens of ordinary cardboard boxes.
Most were empty.
One contained stacks of newspapers.
Another held outdated maps.
A third contained broken radios and obsolete recording equipment.
Marcus looked around in frustration.
“He risked exposing himself for this?”
Harold ignored the clutter and walked toward the rear wall.
Daniel had always believed the best hiding place was not behind something valuable.
It was behind something disappointing.
Harold removed a box labeled Damaged Cables.
Behind it, a narrow section of metal wall had been cut and reattached with magnetic fasteners.
Inside the hidden compartment rested a portable tape recorder and a sealed glass jar containing a roll of film.
Elena photographed both objects before allowing the forensic team to collect them.
The tape recorder contained one message.
Daniel’s voice began immediately.
> “Harold, you are closer than you realize.”
No one breathed.
> “The Three Circles are not searching for the archives.”
> “They already know where most of them are.”
Harold’s expression tightened.
> “They are searching for the name missing from the Keeper’s Ledger.”
Catherine looked toward Arthur.
The ledger contained hundreds of signatures.
But perhaps someone had intentionally been excluded.
Daniel continued.
> “Do not trust the order in which the story was preserved.”
> “Someone rearranged the beginning.”
The message ended with a sharp metallic noise.
Then another voice, farther from the recorder, spoke only two words.
“Time’s over.”
The tape stopped.
No one knew whether Daniel had escaped...
