Chapter 55 - Images That Never Appeared

Harold finally opened the envelope.

Instead of letters, it contained twelve photographic negatives.

The forensic technician carried them into the studio's surviving darkroom where an old enlarger still functioned after minor repairs.

One image appeared after another.

A flood rescue.

A collapsed bridge.

A school evacuation.

Each photograph showed members of the Eight Promises helping quietly in the background while newspapers had focused on public officials standing safely away from danger.

Then the eighth negative emerged.

Everyone in the room fell silent.

It showed Daniel.

Not during a rescue.

Not during a meeting.

He was speaking with three unfamiliar people wearing dark suits outside a government building.

None of the Eight had ever mentioned the meeting.

Michael leaned closer.

"I never knew this happened."

Harold didn't answer.

The ninth photograph proved even stranger.

Daniel was handing a sealed folder to a young woman whose face remained partially hidden by the camera angle.

On the back of the negative envelope Benjamin Cross had written:

She refused to sign her name.

The remaining photographs continued the sequence.

Daniel entered the building.

The unknown woman left alone.

Daniel never appeared in another frame.

Samuel slowly whispered,

"These were taken the week before he disappeared."

Harold nodded.

"And Benjamin never published them."
