Chapter 54 - The Photography Studio

The address led Detective Elena Morris and the others to the eastern edge of the city, where rows of renovated cafés gradually gave way to aging brick storefronts that seemed untouched by time.

Wedged between an abandoned tailor shop and a boarded-up bookstore stood a narrow building with faded gold lettering still visible above its dusty windows.

CROSS PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIO.

The front door was locked.

Yet unlike the surrounding buildings, the studio showed subtle signs of maintenance.

The brass handle had recently been polished.

The hinges made no sound when tested.

Someone still cared for the place.

Marcus obtained a warrant before the forensic team carefully entered.

The air inside smelled faintly of photographic chemicals and old paper.

Thousands of negatives were stored inside labeled metal drawers.

Wedding photographs.

School portraits.

Sporting events.

Street festivals.

Nothing unusual.

Until Catherine noticed an entire cabinet whose labels had been removed.

Every drawer inside carried only a number.

Drawer 1.

Drawer 2.

Drawer 3.

...

Drawer 19.

Harold stopped in front of Drawer 9.

"I've seen this numbering before."

Samuel nodded.

"They're organized like the archives."

Elena carefully opened the drawer.

Inside were hundreds of undeveloped negatives wrapped in protective sleeves.

Most were accompanied by handwritten notes.

Never Published.

Another sleeve read:

Held by Request.

Then Marcus found a larger envelope hidden beneath the others.

Across the front someone had written only four words.

For Harold Bennett Alone.

Nobody opened it immediately.

Harold simply stared at the envelope for several quiet seconds.

May you like

"It waited longer than I expected."
