Chapter 23 - A List of Names

Michael unlocked a narrow steel cabinet hidden behind one of the archive shelves.
Inside were dozens of waterproof folders arranged alphabetically.
Every folder contained handwritten correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and interview transcripts collected over many years.
Elena carefully removed one file.
Its cover contained only a name.
Then another.
And another.
None of the names belonged to famous politicians, wealthy industrialists, or military commanders.
Most were ordinary citizens.
Teachers.
Doctors.
Paramedics.
Bus drivers.
Construction workers.
People whose acts of courage had never reached newspaper headlines.
Harold watched as Elena turned the pages.
"We documented those who quietly helped others when nobody was watching."
"Why preserve these records?"
"Because history often remembers the loudest people."
Samuel gently touched one folder.
"And forgets the kindest."
Michael opened a larger ledger resting at the bottom of the cabinet.
Near the final pages, someone had written new entries using modern ink.
Harold immediately noticed the difference.
"Those weren't there before."
"No."
"When were they added?"
"Within the last year."
Elena leaned closer.
"They're recent."
Michael nodded.
"Someone else has continued the record."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
The final page contained only three handwritten lines.
The First Promise was broken.
The Search has resumed.
Find Harold Bennett before they do.
Nobody in the room spoke.
Those words had clearly been written before the attack on Harold occurred.
Which meant someone had anticipated the assault long before it happened.
As Detective Morris carefully closed the ledger, a radio transmission crackled from an officer stationed outside the warehouse.
"Detective... we've got movement."
"What did you find?"
"There are fresh tire tracks leaving the property."
"How recent?"
The officer answered immediately.
"So recent..."
May you like
"...the engine heat is still rising from the pavement."
Whoever had been watching the warehouse had remained nearby throughout the entire discovery—and had departed only moments after realizing Michael had revealed himself.
