Chapter 7 - The Visitor From Another Lifetime

News of the incident spread far faster than anyone expected. Within hours, local television stations replayed clips recorded by witnesses. The videos showed only fragments—the four young men surrounding Harold, the scattered medicine bottles, the arrival of the black Rolls-Royce—but they were enough to ignite public discussion.

Most viewers focused on the assault.

Others became fascinated by something else.

Who was the elderly man whom powerful people treated with such extraordinary respect?

By late afternoon, detectives had moved Harold to a quiet interview room at the precinct so paramedics could finish treating his injuries. His cuts were superficial, but bruises covered his arms where the attackers had grabbed him. Through it all, Harold answered every question calmly, never exaggerating, never asking for special treatment.

"I don't wish them unnecessary suffering," he told Detective Elena Morris.

She looked up from her notes.

"They showed you very little mercy."

Harold gave a tired smile.

"Justice and revenge are different things."

Before she could respond, a uniformed officer knocked on the door.

"Detective... someone insists on seeing Mr. Bennett."

"No visitors."

"He says they've known each other for forty years."

Harold slowly raised his eyes.

"What name?"

The officer checked the visitor log.

"Samuel Whitaker."

For the first time that day, Harold's calm expression cracked.

Samuel.

A name he had not spoken aloud in decades.

Several minutes later, an elderly man with silver hair entered the room, leaning on a polished cane. His eyes met Harold's, and neither man spoke immediately.

Finally Samuel smiled.

"I searched half the country."

Harold sighed.

"I was hoping you'd never have to find me."

Samuel laughed quietly.

"You always did mistake peace for disappearing."

Detective Morris sensed the conversation carried decades of history.

She quietly stepped outside, leaving the two old friends alone.

Neither of them realized someone in the hallway had already photographed Samuel's arrival and anonymously sent the image to an unknown recipient.
