Chapter 15 - The Notebook Beneath the Floorboards

Later that afternoon Harold quietly walked through his modest home with Samuel.
Neither man spoke much.
The break-in had confirmed something both had secretly feared for years.
Someone had resumed a search that should have ended decades earlier.
Harold stopped in front of an old wooden cabinet.
Samuel looked confused.
"I thought everything important had already been archived."
"So did they."
Harold smiled faintly.
"They searched where ordinary people would search."
He knelt carefully despite the pain still lingering from the assault.
After removing several loose floorboards hidden beneath an old rug, he reached into a narrow compartment and lifted out a weathered leather notebook wrapped in waterproof cloth.
Samuel stared in disbelief.
"You never told anyone."
"I couldn't."
"Not even me."
"The fewer people who knew..."
"...the safer it remained."
Harold carefully opened the notebook.
Inside were handwritten entries spanning many years.
Some pages listed names.
Others contained maps.
Several pages had been intentionally removed long ago.
Detective Morris, who had arrived moments earlier, watched silently.
"May I ask what this is?"
Harold closed the notebook before answering.
"A record."
"Of what?"
"Promises."
"To whom?"
"People who trusted us."
Samuel gently rested his hand on the old notebook.
"If others discover this..."
Harold nodded.
"I know."
Outside the house, another unfamiliar vehicle slowly drove past without stopping.
The driver never looked toward the residence.
Yet a hidden camera mounted behind the windshield captured every angle of the property before the vehicle disappeared around the corner.
Inside, Harold turned another page.
A folded map slipped onto the floor.
Detective Morris instinctively picked it up.
Across the top, faded handwriting read:
"Location Seven — Access Restricted."
Neither Samuel nor Harold had expected that page to remain inside the notebook.
For several long seconds, all three stared at the map without speaking.
Finally Harold broke the silence.
May you like
"I was certain that page had been destroyed years ago."
If he was right, someone else had quietly returned it to the notebook without his knowledge—and that possibility raised even more questions than the map itself.
