Chapter 65 - Elise Ward

Arthur led them to a locked cabinet in the oldest section of the gallery.

Inside were files Catherine had never cataloged.

Each folder carried a red band across the cover.

UNCONFIRMED WITNESS.

The file marked Elise Ward contained only six pages.

No photograph.

No address.

No birth record.

Nothing that proved she had officially existed.

Yet her name appeared repeatedly in handwritten margins across disaster reports connected to the Eight Promises.

E. Ward delivered medicine.

E. Ward warned the bridge crew.

E. Ward recovered the missing register.

Always present.

Never photographed.

Never thanked.

Never listed among members.

Elena turned to Arthur.

“Who was she?”

“A translator. A courier. Sometimes a nurse.”

“Sometimes?”

“She became whatever an emergency required.”

Harold read the final page.

It described the meeting where the Ninth emblem had been offered.

Elise had refused before Daniel could finish speaking.

Her recorded reason contained only one sentence.

> “The moment you name me, someone will learn where to look.”

Michael slowly sat down.

“She knew they were being watched.”

Arthur nodded.

“Long before the rest of us.”

A sealed envelope remained attached to the back cover.

Across the front, written in Daniel’s handwriting, were the words:

Open only if Elise returns.

The adhesive had never been broken.

Then the gallery telephone rang.

Catherine answered.

No one spoke on the other end.

Only a faint mechanical clicking repeated at steady intervals.

Harold listened through the speaker.

Three short clicks.

Two long.

Three short.

Arthur went pale.

“That’s Elise’s field code.”

Elena leaned closer.

“What does it mean?”

Arthur looked toward the sealed envelope.

“She’s alive.”

The clicking stopped.

A woman’s voice, old but steady, spoke one final sentence before the line disconnected.

“Do not open Daniel’s letter until you find the boy in the photograph.”
