Chapter 41 - The Invitation

Late that evening, while everyone continued examining the newly discovered journal and compass, a soft knock echoed through the underground gallery.

One of Catherine's assistants opened the outer security door.

No one stood outside.

Only a small wooden box rested neatly on the stone steps.

The assistant carried it inside.

"No return address."

"No fingerprints," another guard observed after a quick inspection.

Harold carefully lifted the lid.

Inside rested a single chess piece.

A white king carved from ivory.

Beneath it lay a folded card.

Elena unfolded the note.

The handwriting was elegant and remarkably steady.

> You have been searching the past.

> We have been waiting in the future.

> Come alone if you wish to understand why the First Promise was truly broken.

No signature.

No location.

Only one additional detail appeared at the bottom.

A hand-drawn symbol of three interlocking circles.

The same emblem seen on the wrist of the man who infiltrated police headquarters.

Michael slowly exhaled.

"They're no longer hiding."

Arthur quietly corrected him.

"No."

"They've decided we're finally ready to see them."

Harold gently closed the wooden box.

For several moments, no one spoke.

Then he looked toward Elena.

"They've stopped reacting to our investigation."

He paused before adding,

May you like

"They've started directing it."

Outside, hidden among the trees beyond the abandoned railway station, a pair of binoculars reflected the moonlight for only an instant before disappearing into the darkness, silently confirming that the invitation had been received.
