Chapter 33 - The Keeper

The staircase descended nearly forty feet before opening into a surprisingly well-preserved tunnel.
Electric lights illuminated the passage at regular intervals.
Someone had maintained the system.
Recently.
The walls contained framed photographs instead of machinery.
None showed famous people.
Instead, each captured ordinary citizens helping strangers.
A firefighter carrying a child.
A nurse comforting flood victims.
Construction workers pulling survivors from rubble.
Schoolteachers sheltering frightened students during a storm.
Each photograph bore a date.
Each included only one handwritten sentence.
They expected nothing in return.
Harold walked more slowly than anyone else.
His eyes lingered on every frame.
"I remember this flood."
"I remember her."
"I remember that bridge."
Samuel quietly asked,
"Who collected all of these?"
Before Harold could answer, a calm voice echoed from deeper within the tunnel.
"I did."
Everyone turned.
An elderly woman emerged from another corridor carrying a lantern despite the electric lights.
She appeared to be in her late seventies, dressed simply, with silver hair tied neatly behind her head.
She showed no fear upon seeing armed officers.
Instead, she smiled gently at Harold.
"You finally came."
Harold stared in disbelief.
"Catherine..."
Samuel's mouth fell open.
"It can't be."
Michael whispered,
"We attended your funeral."
The woman gave a sad smile.
"I know."
Detective Morris stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The woman looked directly at her before answering.
"My name is Catherine Hale."
She paused.
"And for the last thirty years..."
May you like
"...I have been protecting everything the world believed had already disappeared."
None of them yet realized that Catherine was not merely another surviving member of the old network. She possessed records that even Harold had never seen—records capable of rewriting everything they believed about the Eight Promises and revealing why unknown people had begun hunting them again after so many decades.
