Chapter 43 - The Wall of Voices

The observatory appeared empty.
Broken telescopes lay scattered across the floor, and rainwater dripped steadily through cracks in the ceiling.
Then Arthur quietly walked toward a circular wall hidden behind collapsed shelving.
"Help me."
Four officers pushed together.
The shelving shifted just enough to reveal a steel door concealed behind decades of dust.
Inside was a narrow chamber unlike any archive they had discovered before.
There were no photographs.
No journals.
No film reels.
Instead, dozens of shelves held hundreds of cassette tapes, carefully labeled by year.
1989.
1990.
1991.
1992.
1993.
1994.
1995.
1996.
Each tape carried only a date.
"What are these?" Elena asked.
Catherine smiled sadly.
"Voices."
Harold gently picked up one cassette.
"Every year..."
"...one person recorded what they believed the future should never forget."
Michael inserted a tape into an old recorder.
Static filled the room.
Then an unfamiliar voice began speaking.
> "If someone is listening to this decades from now, remember one thing. History is not erased all at once. It disappears one witness at a time."
Nobody recognized the speaker.
Another tape played.
A different voice.
Another year.
Another witness.
Each recording described ordinary acts of courage that had never appeared in official reports.
Then Samuel selected the cassette marked 1996.
The moment the recording began, Harold froze.
It was Daniel's voice.
