Chapter 59 - Negative Forty-Two

Back inside the photography studio, technicians resumed cataloging every undeveloped negative.

Most corresponded to known disasters and volunteer missions.

Then a young archivist noticed a gap.

"Drawer Forty-Two is missing."

Marcus checked the inventory.

"It existed."

"But it's gone."

Dust patterns confirmed a metal drawer had occupied the empty space until recently.

Unlike the others, it had been removed entirely.

Catherine slowly walked toward the vacant slot.

"I remember Benjamin mentioning Forty-Two."

Samuel looked surprised.

"You do?"

"He once joked that no one should ever develop it."

Harold frowned.

"I thought he was exaggerating."

The archivist discovered an old handwritten index card hidden beneath the cabinet.

Only three lines appeared.

Drawer 42

One Roll

Never Duplicate

Elena studied the card.

"What made that roll different?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

Just then, headquarters called.

Another storage facility connected to Benjamin Cross had been identified through tax records.

The lease remained active.

Paid automatically every year.

For thirty-one consecutive years.

The listed tenant...

...was no longer Benjamin Cross.

The current account holder used only two initials.
