Chapter 49 - The Visitor's Signature

As investigators continued documenting the bunker, Marcus discovered a modern notebook resting inside an old communications cabinet.

Unlike the historical materials surrounding it, this notebook contained entries written within the past six months.

Every visit had been recorded.

Dates.

Weather conditions.

Equipment inspections.

Electrical maintenance.

Whoever had been using the bunker had treated it as an active facility.

The final page contained only one line.

Thank you for preserving this place until they were ready.

No signature.

Until Elena turned the page over.

Pressed lightly into the paper was the impression left by the writer's pen.

Forensic lighting revealed a name.

Not written in ink...

...only embossed by pressure.

Daniel Hale.

Nobody spoke.

Samuel slowly sat down.

"Impossible."

Arthur shook his head.

"We buried him."

Michael corrected him quietly.

"No."

"We buried an empty coffin."

Harold stared at the impressed letters for a long time.

Thirty years of assumptions suddenly felt uncertain.

Outside the bunker, rain began falling heavily against the hillside.

One officer hurried inside carrying a waterproof evidence bag.

"Detective."

"What is it?"

"We found fresh footprints leading away from the rear emergency tunnel."

"How fresh?"

"They were made after the rain started."

Everyone looked toward the tunnel entrance.

That meant someone had remained inside the bunker while the investigation was taking place...

...and had quietly escaped only moments before the officers completed their search.

For the first time, Harold realized the mysterious figure was no longer leaving clues from the past.

They were now walking only minutes ahead of the investigation itself.
