Chapter 8 - The Network Behind the Street Gang

While Harold remained at the station, investigators searched the apartment shared by the four suspects.
They expected stolen wallets.
Instead, they uncovered something much larger.
Hidden inside a storage room were notebooks listing names, dates, and locations across the city. Several entries matched reports of elderly victims who had been robbed during the past six months.
Detective Morris spread the documents across a conference table.
"This wasn't random."
Another investigator nodded.
"They targeted people they believed couldn't fight back."
Victims living alone.
Disabled veterans.
Retired teachers.
Widows collecting pensions.
Each attack had been carefully planned after days of observation.
The youngest suspect finally agreed to speak.
"I never wanted anybody seriously hurt."
Detective Morris remained silent.
He continued.
"It wasn't our idea."
"Whose was it?"
The young man hesitated.
"If I tell you..."
"You'll have protection."
He slowly shook his head.
"You don't understand."
His hands trembled.
"Those four weren't the real problem."
The room fell quiet.
"There are others."
"Who?"
"They choose the targets."
"They collect the money."
"And if somebody refuses..."
He stopped speaking.
The detective noticed genuine fear replacing arrogance.
For the first time, she wondered whether the assault on Harold had accidentally exposed an organized criminal network that had operated unnoticed for years.
Across town, someone listening to a police scanner reached for a burner phone.
"They're talking."
The response came instantly.
