Chapter 24 - The Engine Still Warm

The officers reached the edge of the property less than a minute after the radio call.

A dark SUV had already disappeared beyond the tree line, leaving only faint tire marks across the damp gravel road.

One investigator crouched beside them.

"The vehicle accelerated hard."

Another officer placed a handheld thermal scanner near the tracks.

"The pavement is still holding engine heat."

Detective Elena Morris arrived moments later.

"How long?"

"Less than three minutes."

"So they were watching us the entire time."

No one argued.

Back inside the warehouse, Harold stood quietly beside the projector while Michael carefully closed the steel cabinet.

"They've become bolder," Samuel observed.

Michael nodded.

"They're running out of patience."

Elena turned toward him.

"Who exactly are 'they'?"

Michael hesitated.

"I don't know their names."

"But you've encountered them before."

"Not directly."

"What do you mean?"

"I've spent years recognizing patterns instead of faces."

He pointed toward the projector.

"Every place connected to our records has eventually been searched."

"The storage facility."

"Yes."

"The warehouse."

"Yes."

"The assault on Harold."

Michael lowered his voice.

"Not because they hated him."

"They wanted access to him."

Harold slowly folded the old map and slipped it back into the leather notebook.

"They're following the trail."

Elena frowned.

"Toward Location Seven?"

Harold looked at the reinforced door.

"No."

He paused.

"They've already reached Seven."

The room became silent.

"If they're no longer searching for Seven..."

Elena began.

"...then what comes next?"

Harold answered with quiet certainty.

"They're searching for whoever remembers what came after it."
