Chapter 6 - The Name Hidden for Decades
As investigators collected statements, one elderly shopkeeper slowly approached Harold carrying both wooden crutches.
"I repaired these last winter," he said gently. "You never told me your full name."
Harold smiled faintly.
"There was never a reason."
The shopkeeper hesitated before asking, "Is today finally that reason?"
Harold did not answer.
Instead, he accepted the crutches and slowly stood with assistance from the paramedics.
The detective carefully unwrapped the silver emblem recovered from the thug.
He studied its worn surface before looking toward the suited man.
"I've only seen this insignia once."
"So have most people."
"What exactly does it represent?"
The suited man remained silent for several moments.
"It represents a promise."
"A promise?"
"One that was made many decades ago... and has never been broken."
The detective sensed there was far more to the story than anyone was prepared to reveal.
Meanwhile, officers searching the belongings of the four suspects discovered several stolen wallets, jewelry pieces, and mobile phones reported missing over the previous weeks.
What had begun as a single assault case was expanding into something much larger.
Yet Harold showed almost no interest in the evidence.
His attention remained fixed on the photograph of his late wife.
The suited man quietly walked beside him.
"After all these years... people are going to ask questions."
"I know."
"They'll want to know who you really are."
Harold looked toward the busy street where strangers continued whispering his name without actually knowing it.
"I've spent thirty years trying not to be remembered."
He paused.
"But sometimes..."
He looked back toward the detective, who was still examining the silver emblem with growing curiosity.
