Chapter 22 - Eight Promises

Power returned a few moments later, filling the underground archive with pale fluorescent light.
Michael carefully removed another film canister from the shelf but did not place it in the projector.
Instead, he rested it on the table.
"There were never seven members."
Samuel frowned.
"We counted seven."
Michael slowly shook his head.
"There were eight."
Elena immediately looked toward Harold.
"You never mentioned an eighth person."
Harold answered quietly.
"Because I believed he had died."
Michael smiled sadly.
"That rumor kept many people alive."
He unfolded a faded sheet of paper.
Across the top appeared eight signatures.
Beneath them was a single handwritten sentence:
We protect people, never our own names.
Samuel recognized every signature except one.
"Who is the eighth?"
Michael looked toward Harold before answering.
"The founder."
"The founder disappeared before the organization dissolved."
Harold crossed his arms.
"We searched for years."
"I know."
"You never found him?"
Michael hesitated.
"We found evidence."
"But not the man."
Elena studied the document carefully.
"Why would someone today be hunting people connected to a volunteer organization that disappeared decades ago?"
Michael's expression became serious.
"Because they misunderstand what we protected."
"What do you mean?"
"They think it was wealth."
"It wasn't?"
"No."
"Government secrets?"
"No."
Samuel quietly added,
"It was never about power."
Michael nodded.
"It was about trust."
The detective sensed they were still withholding something important.
Not because they distrusted her.

Because they feared what might happen if the truth became public too soon.
