Chapter 12 - Beneath the Foundation

Daniel replayed the final audio three more times.

"...he can never find what's under the house."

The sentence echoed through Lily's tiny bedroom long after the recording ended.

He removed his headphones and looked toward his daughter.

"Lily... have you ever been in the basement?"

She slowly shook her head.

"There isn't supposed to be one."

Daniel frowned.

He had designed this house himself before leaving overseas. The original blueprint included only a small utility space beneath the kitchen for plumbing access—barely large enough for maintenance.

Nothing more.

Certainly nothing worth hiding.

He quietly opened the architectural plans stored in the cloud account he had kept for years.

Every measurement remained exactly as he remembered.

Then he compared the plans to the house he had walked through that morning.

Something was wrong.

The hallway leading to Michael's office seemed longer than it should have been.

Nearly eight feet longer.

Space that didn't exist on the original drawings.

Hidden space.

Someone had altered the interior after he left.

Daniel printed the floor plan and began measuring each room himself while Rebecca's family slept upstairs.

Kitchen.

Dining room.

Living room.

Office.

Storage closet.

Every measurement confirmed the same conclusion.

A section of the first floor had disappeared.

Not physically.

Architecturally.

It had been sealed behind newer walls.

Lily watched nervously.

"What does it mean?"

Daniel folded the blueprint.

"It means someone spent a great deal of money hiding something."

Before either of them spoke again, a heavy thud echoed from somewhere below the floor.

Not pipes.

Not the furnace.

Footsteps.

Someone...

Or something...

May you like

Had just moved beneath the house.
