Chapter 57 - Rebecca's Role

Daniel placed the personnel file on the desk.

"I want to know about Rebecca."

The old man sighed.

"I expected that."

He opened another cabinet and removed a sealed envelope.

Its label read:

Rebecca Carter — Recruitment File

Daniel stared at it.

"Recruitment?"

The old man nodded.

"She wasn't born into this."

"She was approached."

Samuel immediately began photographing every page.

The documents revealed interviews...

Psychological evaluations...

Financial assessments...

Even reports describing Rebecca's growing debt before Daniel accepted the overseas contract.

"They found her vulnerable," Samuel whispered.

The old man continued.

"They offered solutions."

"They promised security."

"They promised money."

"In exchange?"

"Access."

"Access to the Carter property."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"So she sold her own family."

The old man remained silent for several seconds.

"At first..."

"...she believed she was protecting everyone."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Protecting Lily by turning her into a servant?"

"No."

"Protecting the operation."

He lowered his eyes.

"Once someone joins..."

"...leaving becomes difficult."

Samuel looked up.

"Difficult?"

The old man's expression hardened.

"Three people tried."

"They disappeared."

Daniel looked toward Lily.

"Did Rebecca ever try?"

The old man didn't answer immediately.

Finally he whispered,

May you like

"Twice."
