Chapter 32 - The Passphrase

Samuel examined the recorder from every angle.

"It isn't military encryption," he said quietly. "But whoever protected these files knew exactly what they were doing."

Daniel turned the device over in his hands.

Victor Hayes had never been the kind of man to choose complicated passwords. During the years they worked together overseas, he believed that the strongest secret was often something nobody else would consider important.

Samuel connected the recorder to his laptop.

A single prompt appeared.

PASSCODE REQUIRED

Three failed attempts remaining.

"We're not guessing," Samuel said firmly.

Daniel nodded.

Instead, they began reviewing everything Victor had ever mentioned.

Construction projects.

Company slogans.

Equipment serial numbers.

Nothing fit.

Lily, who had been silently reading her old diary nearby, suddenly looked up.

"Dad..."

Daniel turned toward her.

"You always ended your letters the same way."

He smiled faintly.

"I did?"

She disappeared into her room and returned carrying one of the few letters that had actually reached her before Rebecca intercepted the mail.

She pointed to the final sentence.

'Keep looking toward the sunrise.'

Daniel's expression changed.

Victor had heard him say that phrase countless times at overseas job sites.

It had become something of a private joke between them.

Samuel entered the words.

The recorder remained silent.

Then...

The screen changed.

Access Granted.

A second folder appeared.

Its title consisted of only three words.

For Lily Only.

No one spoke.

Daniel gently placed the recorder in front of his daughter.

"You should hear this first."
