Chapter 69 - The Ledger of Promises

The stranger removed a weathered leather portfolio from beneath his coat.
He handed it directly to Daniel.
"No tricks."
"No traps."
"Read the first page."
Samuel carefully inspected the portfolio before nodding.
"It's safe."
Daniel opened it.
Inside rested a handwritten ledger unlike any they had recovered before.
No financial records.
No property deeds.
Only signatures.
Each signature appeared beneath the same statement.
I accept responsibility for protecting the Carter Record until the rightful heir chooses otherwise.
Daniel slowly turned the pages.
His grandfather's signature.
Victor Hayes.
Eleanor Marsh.
Several unfamiliar names.
Then...
His father's.
Daniel froze.
His father had signed the ledger nearly twelve years before his death.
"He knew," Daniel whispered.
"He knew all of this."
The stranger nodded.
"He discovered the truth."
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"He intended to."
The stranger paused before continuing.
"But he realized something."
"If he explained everything..."
"...you would never leave."
Daniel looked up.
"So he sent me overseas himself?"
"No."
"He merely chose not to stop what had already begun."
Silence filled the tunnel.
Lily gently touched Daniel's arm.
"He thought he was protecting you."
Daniel closed the ledger.
"Or protecting whatever is inside that vault."
The stranger answered quietly.
May you like
"Perhaps both."
