Chapter 71 - The Vault Reacts

Daniel turned back toward the enormous iron door.

Nothing about it had changed.

No locks had opened.

No mechanisms had moved.

Yet the air inside the chamber felt different.

Warmer.

The stranger walked beside him.

"The vault doesn't respond to keys."

"It responds to decisions."

Daniel frowned.

"That's impossible."

"So is half of what you've already seen."

The old caretaker quietly approached the brass nameplate.

For the first time, everyone noticed faint engravings surrounding it.

Not words.

Fingerprints.

Hundreds of them.

Samuel leaned closer.

"They've been carved into the metal."

"No," the stranger corrected.

"They formed naturally over time."

Daniel placed his hand against the center of the door.

The metal felt unexpectedly warm.

A low vibration traveled through the stone floor.

Lily stepped back.

The brass nameplate slowly rotated ninety degrees.

Deep within the mountain, ancient gears began turning.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough to prove the mechanism still lived.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

The enormous door shifted less than an inch.

A narrow line of darkness appeared between the two iron panels.

From somewhere beyond the opening came the unmistakable scent of old cedar wood and aged paper.

Then...

Another sound.

Not machinery.

Not footsteps.

A child's laughter.

Soft.

Distant.

As though it had echoed through the vault for generations.

The stranger quietly closed his eyes.

"I hoped that sound would never be heard again."

Daniel stared into the thin black opening.

"What is inside?"

The stranger answered without looking at him.

"The question isn't what."

"It's who."
