Chapter 67 - The Tunnel Beyond the Archive

Victor Hayes' hidden map revealed a narrow service tunnel concealed behind Shelf C.

Removing several archive boxes exposed a reinforced steel hatch.

Its hinges groaned loudly as Daniel forced it open.

Cold air rushed upward.

The passage beyond looked older than every tunnel they had explored so far.

Natural stone surrounded weathered brickwork.

Oil lamps still hung from iron hooks.

Someone had preserved the original construction.

Lily shined her flashlight ahead.

The tunnel curved gently before disappearing into darkness.

Every few yards, faded symbols had been carved into the walls.

The same evolving symbol from the compass.

Except here...

It slowly transformed into something completely different.

Samuel stopped to compare them with photographs from earlier chapters of their investigation.

"They're not changing."

"They're spelling something."

Letter by letter...

The symbols formed a single word.

REMEMBER

Daniel continued walking.

After nearly fifteen minutes, the tunnel widened into a circular chamber containing only one object.

An enormous iron door.

No handle.

No visible lock.

Only a polished brass nameplate.

Unlike every previous clue, this one displayed no code.

No initials.

No cryptic message.

Just four engraved words:

THE CARTER FAMILY VAULT

Daniel reached toward the cold metal surface.

Before his fingers touched it...

A voice echoed through the tunnel behind them.

Calm.

Familiar.

And unmistakably alive.

"Daniel..."

"You've come farther than your grandfather ever allowed himself to go."

The voice belonged to the same man heard on Rebecca's final recording.

May you like

But this time...

He was standing somewhere in the darkness behind them.
