Chapter 66 - Rebecca's Last Recording

Samuel's phone vibrated.

Officer Martinez had recovered another item from Rebecca's abandoned office.

A digital voice recorder.

Thirty minutes later it sat on the archive table.

The final recording had been made only six days earlier.

Rebecca's voice sounded exhausted.

"If anyone finds this..."

"...things have already gone wrong."

Daniel remained silent.

"I never wanted Lily to suffer."

"I told myself it was temporary."

"I believed Daniel would return before everything became permanent."

She began crying softly.

"They promised no one would get hurt."

"They lied."

The recording paused.

Several seconds of silence followed.

Then another voice entered.

Male.

Calm.

Older.

"We're out of time."

Rebecca answered immediately.

"He deserves the truth."

"No."

"He deserves the version that keeps him searching."

Daniel clenched his fists.

The older man continued.

"If Daniel reaches the Archive..."

"...he must never reach the Vault."

The recording ended abruptly.

Samuel replayed the unknown voice three times.

"It isn't the caretaker."

Daniel agreed.

"No."

The caretaker looked genuinely disturbed.

"I know that voice."

Everyone turned toward him.

"Who is it?"

The old man closed his eyes.

May you like

"I thought he died twenty years ago."
