Chapter 41 - The Locked Church Records

Following the address listed on one of the trust documents, Daniel and Samuel arrived at a century-old church on the edge of town.

The building had long since stopped holding regular services.

Only a caretaker remained.

An elderly woman welcomed them politely.

When Daniel explained why they had come, her expression changed.

"I've been expecting someone."

Samuel immediately looked up.

"You knew we'd come?"

She nodded.

"Not you specifically."

"But someone from the Carter family."

She led them beneath the sanctuary into a small archive room filled with handwritten parish records.

Births.

Marriages.

Deaths.

Property donations.

Everything had been preserved for generations.

One cabinet remained locked.

The caretaker removed a brass key from around her neck.

"I was instructed never to open this unless a direct Carter descendant requested it."

Daniel silently unlocked the cabinet.

Inside rested only one leather binder.

No title.

No date.

The first page contained a handwritten family tree.

Several names had been crossed out.

Others circled in red.

Near the center appeared Daniel's own name.

Beside it someone had written:

Left the country as planned.

Daniel slowly lowered the binder.

"As planned?"

He had believed leaving overseas had been entirely his own decision.

The next page contained minutes from a private meeting held sixteen years earlier.

One line stood alone near the bottom.

Ensure Daniel accepts the international contract before July.

Samuel read it twice.

Then a third time.

"This wasn't coincidence."

Daniel nodded.

"My departure..."

May you like

"...was arranged long before I ever signed the contract."
