Chapter 49 - The Forgotten Storage Room

The mysterious interview changed everything.
Daniel returned to the Carter house searching for anything connected to the months before his departure overseas.
He walked through each room slowly.
Then stopped outside the laundry room.
A narrow wooden door sat beside the washing machine.
He had ignored it every day since returning.
As a child...
It had been a simple storage closet.
The door remained locked.
Lily frowned.
"I've never been inside."
Daniel examined the old lock.
Unlike the newer hidden rooms, this lock had clearly been original to the house.
The brass key from his grandfather's toolbox fit perfectly.
The door creaked open.
Dust drifted through the air.
Inside stood shelves filled with old moving boxes.
Most contained ordinary belongings.
Holiday decorations.
Old curtains.
Kitchen utensils.
Near the back wall rested one heavy wooden crate stamped with faded shipping labels.
Destination:
Dubai.
Daniel's heart skipped.
That had been his first overseas assignment.
The crate had never left the house.
Inside lay dozens of personal items Daniel believed he had taken with him.
Old notebooks.
Work journals.
Letters.
Even the leather passport holder he thought he had lost years earlier.
Someone had secretly packed a duplicate version of his belongings.
Or...
Someone had removed the originals before he ever departed.
Folded inside one notebook was a boarding pass.
Same flight.
Same date.
Same destination.
But the passenger name wasn't Daniel Carter.
It belonged to someone called...
May you like
David Cross.
