Chapter 33 - Victor's Confession
Lily pressed Play.
Victor Hayes' voice returned, clearer than before.
"Lily..."
"If you're listening to this, your father finally made it home."
"I hope I'm wrong about everything that forced me to record these messages."
Daniel felt a chill run through him.
Victor continued.
"When Daniel accepted the overseas contract, he believed it was the opportunity of a lifetime."
"It wasn't."
"It was the perfect excuse."
"They wanted him gone."
"They wanted the Carter house."
Samuel quickly began taking notes.
Victor never mentioned names.
Only facts.
"The property wasn't valuable because of the building."
"It was valuable because of what had once been buried beneath it."
Daniel frowned.
"My father never told me anything."
Victor sighed heavily on the recording.
"Because he didn't know the whole story either."
The recording crackled briefly before continuing.
"Years ago..."
"Long before you were born..."
"Someone hid documents connected to several powerful families."
"They were never recovered."
"They believed your grandfather found them."
Daniel slowly looked toward the old family photograph hanging in Samuel's office.
His grandfather had been an ordinary carpenter.
Or so he had always believed.
Victor's voice lowered.
"If they couldn't find the documents..."
"They would simply control the land forever."
The recording ended with another warning.
"Trust evidence."
