Chapter 29 - The Midnight Visitor

The security footage captured every movement.

The figure wore dark clothing.

Gloves.

A hood.

Even inside the house.

Samuel zoomed in.

The person's face remained hidden.

Daniel whispered,

"Not Rebecca."

The height was different.

Broader shoulders.

Longer stride.

The figure unfolded the blueprint carefully.

Not like someone seeing it for the first time...

But like someone confirming information already memorized.

Then something unexpected happened.

Instead of stealing the documents...

The visitor took a pen from a pocket.

They circled one section of the drawing.

Drew an arrow.

Then quietly wrote three words.

Wrong room. Look.

Seconds later the person returned the blueprint exactly where it had been.

Before leaving, the figure stopped outside Lily's bedroom.

Daniel's muscles tightened.

The stranger simply stood there for several seconds.

Then gently placed a small envelope beneath her door.

Without making a sound...

The visitor disappeared through the back entrance.

Daniel and Samuel waited another minute before rushing downstairs.

The envelope remained untouched.

Inside was a single brass key.

Attached to it was a faded luggage tag.

Locker 114

No station.

No address.

Only the number.

Samuel examined the key closely.

"It isn't new."

"No."

Daniel agreed.

"It's been waiting for someone."

Lily turned the key over in her hand.

On the reverse side, barely visible beneath years of scratches, two tiny initials had been engraved.

D.C.

Daniel froze.

May you like

Those were his own initials.
