Chapter 64 - The Jacket in the Reflection

Samuel enlarged the final photograph until individual pixels became visible.
The blurred figure remained impossible to identify.
But the jacket...
There was no mistake.
The faded navy fabric.
The reflective silver stripes across the shoulders.
The stitched company logo from Daniel's first overseas employer.
Most importantly...
The small tear near the left sleeve.
Daniel remembered exactly how it happened.
A steel beam had caught the fabric during a sandstorm nearly fourteen years earlier.
He had repaired it himself that same night.
"I never left that jacket behind," Daniel whispered.
Samuel looked up.
"You told us it disappeared."
"It did."
"Three days after I returned home."
Lily frowned.
"I've never seen anyone wearing it."
The caretaker quietly examined the image.
Then he asked a question that surprised everyone.
"When exactly did it disappear?"
Daniel thought carefully.
"The week before my final flight home."
The old man nodded slowly.
"Then whoever wore it tonight..."
"...wanted you to recognize it."
Samuel looked around the endless archive.
"This wasn't surveillance."
"It was an invitation."
Daniel folded the photograph and placed it inside his notebook.
"If they're inviting us..."
"...we're going to find out why."
Far down another aisle...
A single archive box closed by itself with a dull wooden thud.
May you like
No one had touched it.
