Chapter 72 - Beyond the Narrow Opening

The thin gap between the iron doors widened no more than two inches.
Yet a cool current of air drifted through it, carrying the unmistakable scent of cedar, old paper, and candle wax.
Daniel instinctively stepped forward.
The stranger raised a hand.
"Don't force it."
"I'm done waiting."
"So was your grandfather."
Daniel paused.
"What happened?"
"He learned that some doors open because of strength."
The old man looked at the vault.
"This one never did."
Samuel aimed a small inspection camera through the opening.
The lens revealed only darkness.
Then...
Rows of wooden shelves.
A long corridor.
And portraits hanging along stone walls.
The image suddenly flickered.
A brief silhouette crossed the camera's view.
Not running.
Walking.
Samuel immediately froze the frame.
The corridor was empty again.
"No heat signature," he muttered.
"No movement afterward."
Daniel reached into the narrow gap and felt the edge of the massive door.
Instead of cold iron...
His fingertips touched polished oak.
"There are two doors," he whispered.
The stranger nodded.
"The iron protects the entrance."
"The wood protects the memory."
Lily quietly looked through the opening herself.
At the far end of the corridor she noticed a single lantern burning steadily.
"Someone lit that recently."
No one answered.
May you like
Because everyone had noticed the same thing.
