Chapter 93 - The Hidden Testament

While Samuel continued examining the terminal, Daniel searched the Last Ledger once more.

Near the back cover, he noticed that the leather binding felt thicker than the rest.

He carefully pressed along the spine.

A narrow compartment sprang open.

Inside rested a single folded document wrapped in oilcloth.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Across the top, written in elegant script, were the words:

Private Testament of Margaret Carter

Daniel unfolded it carefully.

"My grandmother..."

Elias nodded.

"She was the last person to write something that never entered the official Archive."

The testament contained no property distribution.

No legal instructions.

Instead, it read like a personal letter.

> If my descendants are reading this, then the Archive has survived longer than I wished.

>

> Remember this above everything else:

>

> No record is more valuable than the people who create it.

Daniel continued reading.

> Every generation believed protecting the Record justified sacrifice.

>

> They were wrong.

>

> We preserved truth while slowly losing our family.

Lily quietly wiped away a tear.

The final paragraph had been underlined twice.

> If one day a Carter chooses to end this responsibility forever, do not call that decision betrayal.

>

> Call it freedom.

The room fell silent again.

For the first time, Daniel wondered whether the greatest act of courage might not be protecting the Archive...
