Chapter 39 - The Film That Changed Everything
Back at Samuel's office, they carefully restored the old projector.
The film crackled as it began turning.
Grainy black-and-white images slowly appeared on the wall.
A family picnic.
Children running.
Daniel recognized himself immediately.
His parents laughed beside the river while his grandfather adjusted the camera.
Everything looked ordinary.
Then the footage abruptly changed.
The camera had apparently continued recording after everyone believed filming had ended.
Daniel's grandfather walked away from the family gathering toward the old well.
Another man followed him.
The image blurred, but their conversation remained visible.
His grandfather handed the stranger a thick envelope.
The stranger refused it.
Several minutes passed before the grandfather pointed toward the ground beneath the well.
The stranger looked shocked.
Then both men disappeared from view.
The film continued for another thirty seconds.
Just before ending, the camera accidentally captured the stranger's face clearly for the first time.
Samuel froze the frame.
Daniel stepped closer.
"I've seen him before."
"So have I," Samuel replied.
They both turned toward the photograph recovered from the abandoned estate.
The elderly man standing beside Rebecca fourteen years earlier...
Was the same young man appearing beside Daniel's grandfather decades ago.
He hadn't merely known the Carter family.
He had been watching them across generations.
Before anyone could speak again, Samuel's office phone rang.
He answered.
After only a few seconds, his expression hardened.
"The forensic lab finished examining the anonymous note left in your house."
Daniel asked quietly,
"Did they find fingerprints?"
Samuel slowly lowered the phone.
"No."
"They found something much more disturbing."
