Chapter 85 - The Second Half of File Zero

Daniel unfolded the remaining pages from File Zero.

The handwriting matched every earlier message believed to have come from Victor Hayes.

The document wasn't a confession.

It was a timeline.

Each page described a decision that had changed the Carter family's history.

1968 – The Record is divided.

1983 – The first guardian refuses ownership.

1995 – The fire destroys only the false archive.

2011 – Daniel Carter accepts overseas employment.

Daniel paused.

Someone had added another line using different ink.

2026 – Lily Carter returns the choice to the family.

Daniel looked toward Lily.

"You weren't even part of the plan."

Elias answered quietly.

"Not originally."

Samuel continued reading.

Near the bottom of the final page, another sentence had been underlined twice.

> Never confuse the Archive with the Record. One preserves information. The other preserves truth.

Daniel frowned.

"What's the difference?"

Elias walked toward one of the old clocks.

"The Archive stores evidence."

He rested his hand on the brass frame.

"The Record decides which evidence survives."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel suddenly understood why generations had fought over this place.

It had never been about wealth.

May you like

It had always been about controlling history itself.
