Chapter 6 - The Bank Statements

Daniel asked one simple question.
"Did you ever receive the money I sent?"
Lily looked confused.
"What money?"
He opened his banking application.
Every monthly transfer remained there.
Thousands of dollars.
Month after month.
Year after year.
Rebecca had acknowledged every payment.
Even sent thank-you messages.
Daniel quickly calculated the total.
The number exceeded two million dollars.
Enough for Lily to attend the best universities...
Travel the world...
Start any career she wanted.
Instead...
She owned three faded shirts.
One broken pair of shoes.
And a bedroom smaller than a storage closet.
Daniel photographed every bank statement.
Every transfer receipt.
Every confirmation email.
He uploaded copies into encrypted cloud storage.
Years overseas had taught him another lesson.
Evidence disappears.
Duplicates survive.
Then he noticed something unexpected.
One payment from six years earlier had been rejected before being resent.
Attached to it was an unfamiliar account number.
Not Rebecca's.
Someone else had briefly received the money.
He enlarged the document.
The account holder's initials were only two letters.
"E. C."
Daniel had never seen those initials before.
Lily looked over his shoulder.
Her face suddenly turned pale.
"I've seen those letters."
"Where?"
"In Uncle Michael's office."
Daniel slowly raised his eyes.
Rebecca's husband had always claimed he knew nothing about finances.
Apparently...

That wasn't true.
