Chapter 46 - The Key Without a Lock

The brass compass, the first chamber key, the second chamber key...
Now Daniel laid every recovered object across Samuel's conference table.
Something still didn't fit.
One small brass key remained unidentified.
It had been found inside the time capsule beneath the oak tree.
No lock had matched it.
Samuel measured every groove.
"It's handmade."
"Not factory-produced."
Daniel turned it over in his hand.
The worn edges suggested decades of use.
Lily suddenly noticed something unusual.
"It isn't worn evenly."
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked.
She pointed toward one side.
"The scratches only go halfway."
Samuel smiled.
"Good observation."
He placed the key beneath a magnifying lens.
Lily was right.
Half the blade showed normal wear.
The other half appeared almost untouched.
"It was never fully inserted."
Daniel frowned.
"So it doesn't belong to an ordinary lock."
For the next hour they tested every hidden compartment, cabinet, and safe they had discovered.
Nothing.
Frustrated, Daniel absentmindedly placed the key beside the modified compass.
The compass needle immediately shifted.
Not north.
Toward the key.
Samuel looked up.
"The metal isn't affecting the compass."
"It's the engraving."
Tiny grooves cut into the brass formed the same mysterious symbol.
Daniel aligned the symbol on the key with the matching symbol engraved onto the compass.
A soft click echoed inside the instrument.
The back cover sprang open.
Hidden inside rested a tightly rolled strip of thin parchment.
Only one sentence had been written upon it.
