Chapter 52 - The Road to Blackstone Quarry

The anonymous photograph changed Daniel's plans.

Until now, he had assumed someone was following them from a distance.

Now he knew something far more unsettling.

Whoever was watching had been close enough to photograph the dining room through the front window.

Samuel immediately reviewed the security cameras.

Nothing.

Every exterior camera had functioned normally.

No unfamiliar vehicles.

No pedestrians.

No movement near the property.

"It's impossible," Samuel muttered.

Daniel walked slowly through the living room.

Then stopped beside the large bay window.

"The picture wasn't taken from outside the fence."

Lily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel held the printed photograph against the glass.

"The angle is too high."

Samuel stepped outside and climbed onto the front porch railing.

Still wrong.

The photograph had been taken from nearly twelve feet above ground.

There were no balconies.

No neighboring buildings.

No trees close enough.

Only one possibility remained.

"A drone," Samuel said quietly.

Daniel nodded.

"But not an ordinary one."

The image quality suggested professional equipment.

The operator had remained far enough away to avoid being heard.

Someone wasn't merely watching.

They were documenting every move.

Samuel folded the photograph.

"We're leaving for the quarry tonight."

Daniel looked toward Lily.

"You stay here."

She shook her head before he even finished speaking.

"No."

"They've watched me my whole life."

"I'm done hiding."

Daniel wanted to argue.

Instead, he simply placed a flashlight into her hand.

Three hours later...

Their SUV disappeared into the darkness, heading toward the abandoned Blackstone Quarry.

None of them noticed another vehicle quietly pull onto the highway several miles behind.

May you like

Its headlights remained off.
