Chapter 54 - The Elevator Beneath the Quarry

The sound repeated.

Metal striking metal.

Slow.

Rhythmic.

Daniel motioned for silence.

Following the noise, they descended an old service road into the lowest section of the quarry.

There, hidden behind collapsed scaffolding, stood a concrete structure built directly into the rock face.

It resembled an ordinary maintenance building.

Except...

Every door had been reinforced with steel.

Samuel examined the faded company logo.

His expression changed immediately.

"The same contractor."

"The one that built the hidden room beneath your house."

Daniel slowly opened the entrance.

Inside they found generators.

Ventilation equipment.

Electrical panels.

Most had long since stopped working.

At the center of the room stood something none of them expected.

An industrial elevator.

Its doors remained closed.

Above them, a faded indicator displayed only one letter.

B

"No basement should exist here," Samuel whispered.

Daniel examined the control panel.

No buttons.

Only a circular key slot.

The same unusual shape they had already encountered several times.

Lily removed the brass key recovered from the time capsule.

It almost fit.

Almost.

But not completely.

Samuel tried the second chamber key.

Still wrong.

Then Daniel remembered the compass.

He removed the hidden brass insert that had opened the secret compartment weeks earlier.

The insert fit perfectly.

A mechanical click echoed through the shaft.

Lights flickered for the first time in decades.

The elevator doors slowly began to open.

Cold air drifted upward.

Along with a faint smell of old paper.

And something else.

Fresh coffee.

May you like

Someone had been there recently.
