Chapter 90 - The Last Ledger

The massive black book rested alone at the center of the table.

Unlike every other archive they had uncovered, it had no lock.

No hidden mechanism.

No code.

Only a strip of dark leather held it closed.

Elias looked toward Daniel.

"This ledger has waited longer than anyone in this room has been alive."

Daniel carefully untied the leather strap.

The cover opened without resistance.

The first pages contained no writing.

Only thick handmade paper.

Samuel turned another page.

Still blank.

Lily frowned.

"It's empty."

"No," Elias replied.

"It isn't."

He gently rotated the ledger toward the light.

Invisible writing slowly emerged.

Not paragraphs.

Names.

Thousands of them.

Each appeared beside a single handwritten sentence.

Truth Preserved

Others carried different notes.

Truth Altered

Truth Lost

Samuel stared in disbelief.

"This isn't a family record."

"It's a history of decisions."

Daniel continued turning pages.

Every generation had apparently chosen which version of certain events would survive.

Some choices corrected lies.

Others created them.

Then...

He found his own name.

No entry had been completed.

Only a blank space waited beneath it.

At the bottom of the page, a single instruction had been written decades earlier.

The next decision cannot be reversed.

Daniel slowly closed the ledger.

"My father wanted me to decide something."

Elias nodded.

"Yes."

May you like

"But not today."
