Chapter 9 - The Signature That Wasn't Hers
Daniel carefully spread the documents across the desk.
Each transfer from overseas had arrived exactly as he remembered.
Each withdrawal carried Lily's name.
Except...
The signatures didn't match.
Some leaned sharply to the right.
Others curved awkwardly.
Several looked almost childlike.
Daniel glanced toward Lily.
"Did you ever sign bank papers?"
She shook her head.
"I wasn't allowed near the bank."
"What about when you turned eighteen?"
Rebecca had claimed that Lily handled many legal matters herself.
Again...
Another lie.
Daniel compared the signatures with Lily's handwriting from an old notebook lying on the shelf.
Completely different.
Even the formation of simple letters failed to match.
Then another document caught his attention.
A notarized declaration.
According to the paper, Lily had voluntarily transferred management authority over her inheritance to Rebecca.
Date signed:
Three years ago.
Daniel looked directly at Lily.
"Were you ever taken to a lawyer?"
"No."
"Did you ever meet a notary?"
"I don't even know what one does."
Silence filled the office.
Someone had forged far more than signatures.
Someone had built an entire legal illusion.
As Daniel continued reading, one page slipped from the folder.
It landed face up on the floor.
Across the top appeared a familiar name.
Samuel Brooks.
Daniel frowned.
His own attorney's name appeared on a document he had never seen before.
Someone had been using Samuel's identity...
