Chapter 26 - Lily's Memory Returns
That evening, after returning home, Lily sat quietly in the backyard.
Daniel joined her without speaking.
The old oak tree he had planted before leaving still stood tall.
Lily rested her hand against its rough bark.
"I remembered something."
Daniel waited patiently.
"I used to come here when I was little."
"You buried something beneath this tree."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"I did."
Lily looked at him.
"You said it was for the day we would finally be together again."
Daniel had almost forgotten.
Years before leaving, he had buried a small metal time capsule beneath the tree as a promise to his daughter.
The next morning, they carefully dug beside the roots.
Several inches below the surface, Daniel's shovel struck metal.
The capsule remained exactly where he had left it.
Inside were photographs.
A pocket watch.
A handwritten letter.
And a cassette recorder.
Lily smiled through tears while holding one of the photographs.
She had not seen many pictures of herself with her father since childhood.
Daniel pressed play on the recorder.
His younger voice filled the air.
"Lily... if you're listening to this, it means I've finally come home."
The recording continued with stories, jokes, and promises Daniel had made fifteen years earlier.
Neither of them noticed someone watching from the neighboring property through a pair of binoculars.
The observer quietly raised a phone.
"He's found the capsule."
A calm voice answered from the other end.
