No one spoke.
The glowing monitor continued displaying the same words.
Future Guardian Identified
Lily Carter
Samuel immediately disconnected the terminal from its network.
The screen remained unchanged.
"It isn't receiving new data," he said quietly.
"It's generating it locally."
Daniel turned toward Elias.
"You said no one could decide until the Ledger was opened."
"I believed that."
"You were wrong."
Elias slowly approached the terminal.
For several moments, he simply stared at the name.
"I have never seen the Archive make a selection on its own."
Lily looked uncomfortable.
"I don't want any of this."
Daniel placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
"No one is forcing you."
The monitor suddenly chimed again.
A second message appeared beneath the first.
Confirmation Pending
Guardian Must Accept Freely
Samuel exhaled.
"Good."
"So it still requires consent."
Lily looked around the room.
"What happens if I refuse?"
The old caretaker answered honestly.
"I don't know."
"No one ever has."
Daniel looked back at the glowing screen.
