Chapter 11 - The Employee Nobody Expected
While the executive meeting continued upstairs, news of the extraordinary board session quietly spread throughout headquarters.
Nobody knew the details.
But everyone sensed something unusual was happening.
In the customer operations department, a maintenance technician named Victor quietly continued repairing a damaged network cabinet.
Few people knew much about him.
He had worked at Vance Dynamics for nearly twenty-eight years.
Most younger managers barely greeted him.
Some assumed he lacked ambition because he had never pursued executive promotions.
They were wrong.
Victor had declined promotions several times.
He preferred solving problems rather than managing politics.
As he packed away his tools, his phone vibrated.
The message came from Arthur Vance's private assistant.
Please report to the executive boardroom immediately.
Victor frowned.
He checked the sender twice.
Surely there had been a mistake.
Meanwhile upstairs, Margaret reviewed another section of her report.
"My investigation also identified several employees whose contributions have been consistently overlooked."
Arthur looked interested.
"You've prepared recommendations?"
"Yes."
The screen changed again.
A list of names appeared.
Most executives recognized none of them.
Receptionists.
Warehouse supervisors.
Administrative assistants.
Field technicians.
Maintenance staff.
Daniel looked confused.
"Why are these employees relevant?"
Margaret met his eyes.
"Because while leadership spent years chasing impressive titles, these people quietly kept the company functioning."
Arthur smiled for the first time that morning.
"I've always believed extraordinary companies are sustained by ordinary people doing extraordinary work."
Just then, there was a knock at the boardroom door.
Victor stepped inside wearing his work uniform, still carrying a toolbox.
He looked around nervously.
"I'm sorry... I was told someone needed me."
Several executives looked puzzled.
Margaret, however, smiled with genuine respect.
"Yes, Mr. Victor."
"We've been waiting for you."
