Chapter 16 - Linda's Quiet Strength
The following morning, Margaret requested permission to observe daily operations without announcing where she would spend her time.
Steven Grant agreed immediately.
He had nothing to hide.
Or so he believed.
Margaret spent almost the entire day beside Linda Brooks.
She never interfered.
She simply watched.
By mid-afternoon, a clear pattern emerged.
Whenever a difficult customer called, supervisors transferred the case to Linda.
Whenever an important client threatened to terminate a contract, Linda resolved the issue.
Whenever software failed, Linda somehow knew temporary solutions no one else remembered.
She had become the department's unofficial encyclopedia.
Yet when a leadership meeting began, Linda was not invited.
Instead, three newly promoted managers entered the conference room.
All were under thirty-five.
All had less than five years with the company.
Margaret asked quietly, "Does Linda ever attend strategy meetings?"
A supervisor laughed.
"Oh, Linda doesn't like management."
Margaret looked toward Linda.
Later that afternoon she asked the question herself.
Linda smiled sadly.
"I've never been invited."
The answer hung between them.
Margaret asked another question.
"Have you ever applied?"
Linda nodded.
"Four times."
"What happened?"
"They said I had valuable experience..."
She paused.
"...but they were looking for someone who better represented the future."
Margaret remained silent.
The sentence sounded almost identical to Daniel Ross's comments.
Different office.
Different managers.
Exactly the same reasoning.
Before leaving for the evening, Margaret requested Linda's complete employment history.
The HR manager hesitated.
"That's confidential."
Margaret calmly presented authorization signed personally by Arthur Vance.
Within minutes, the file arrived.
Promotion recommendations.
Outstanding performance reviews.
Leadership assessments.
Awards.
Client commendations.
Every evaluation described Linda as exceptional.
Every promotion request ended with the same result.
