Chapter 19 - The Candidate Who Never Got a Chance

Margaret requested another confidential interview.

This time, the employee waiting outside the meeting room was only twenty-nine years old.

His name was Ethan Cole.

Unlike Linda Brooks, Ethan wasn't overlooked because of age.

He had been overlooked because he refused to participate in office politics.

Margaret invited him to sit.

"I understand you applied for two management positions."

Ethan nodded.

"I made the final round both times."

"What happened?"

"I was told I lacked executive presence."

Margaret studied his file.

Every performance review rated him exceptional.

Client satisfaction scores ranked among the highest in the region.

He had even developed an automation system that saved hundreds of staff hours each month.

None of that had earned him a promotion.

Margaret asked quietly,

"Did anyone explain what executive presence meant?"

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"No."

He paused.

"But one manager told me privately that I asked too many questions."

"What kind of questions?"

"I kept asking why experienced employees were being ignored."

Margaret made another note.

"So questioning leadership became a liability."

Ethan looked surprised.

"You already knew?"

"I suspected."

She closed the folder.

"This investigation isn't only about discrimination."

"It isn't?"

"No."

"It's about whether competence has been replaced by obedience."

Those words stayed with Ethan long after he left the room.

For the first time in years, someone had described exactly what he had experienced.

Outside, several employees noticed Ethan leaving Margaret's office.

Rumors spread quickly.

Some believed promotions were about to be reviewed.

Others feared layoffs.

No one guessed the investigation was becoming much larger than staffing decisions.
