Chapter 61 - The Call from an Unknown Number

Just after midnight, Margaret's secure phone vibrated.

The caller ID displayed no number.

Only the word:

PRIVATE

She answered cautiously.

"This is Margaret Hale."

Several seconds passed before an elderly voice replied.

"You've opened the wrong door."

Margaret remained calm.

"Who is this?"

"I knew Harold."

The voice was steady.

"I warned him not to keep copies."

Arthur immediately activated the recording system.

Margaret continued.

"If you knew Harold Bennett, why wait until now?"

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

"Because until today..."

"...you were searching in the past."

Another pause.

"Now you're approaching the present."

Margaret felt every investigator in the room watching her.

"The hidden room beneath headquarters..."

She deliberately stopped speaking.

The caller interrupted.

"Don't enter it."

Arthur leaned closer.

"Why?"

The caller ignored him.

"There are records inside that were never meant to become history."

Margaret asked one final question.

"Who are you?"

The line remained silent for several moments.

Then the voice answered softly.

"I was never important."

"You simply never noticed the people who carried the keys."

The connection ended.

Cybersecurity specialists immediately began tracing the call.

Within minutes they returned.

"It wasn't routed through any commercial network."

Margaret looked up.

"Then where did it originate?"

The analyst slowly turned the monitor.

The signal path ended less than two kilometers from headquarters.

Someone who knew Harold Bennett...

Someone who knew about Office 7C...

May you like

And someone who knew the hidden chamber existed...

Had been watching the investigation from somewhere inside the same city all along.
