Chapter 83 - The Redacted Photograph
Hidden between two chapters of Volume II rested an old black-and-white photograph.
Unlike the conference pictures already recovered, this image showed a private dinner attended by only nine people.
Arthur immediately recognized three former executives.
Samuel identified Harold Bennett.
Charles Whitmore appeared near the center.
One chair, however, had been deliberately scratched with a blade until the seated person's face became impossible to identify.
Margaret examined the damage under magnification.
The destruction had occurred decades earlier.
Not recently.
Someone had wanted one specific individual removed while leaving everyone else visible.
On the back of the photograph, a handwritten note remained intact.
> The mentor must never become the story.
Olivia stared at the words.
"So the person wasn't hiding from history."
Margaret nodded.
"They were hiding history from the person."
The forensic imaging team searched for surviving silver halide patterns beneath the scratches.
Hours passed.
A faint outline slowly emerged.
Not enough for identification.
But enough to reveal one unexpected detail.
The unknown individual had been wearing the same compass emblem found on every anonymous package delivered during the investigation.
Arthur looked toward Margaret.
"The symbol belonged to someone."
Margaret answered quietly.
