Back at headquarters, investigators reconstructed the routing path using Helen's documents.
The trail did not end in the executive correspondence department.
Nor did it end with Richard Sloan.
Instead, nearly every confidential document paused briefly at a location few current employees even recognized.
Office 7C.
Arthur frowned.
"There hasn't been an Office 7C for years."
The facilities director checked old building blueprints.
"There used to be."
He projected a floor plan from twenty-one years earlier.
Office 7C had occupied a small suite between the Chairman's office and executive administration.
Today, the space no longer existed.
It had been absorbed during a renovation.
Margaret studied the blueprint.
"Who occupied it?"
The facilities director searched archived occupancy logs.
"No department name."
"No employee assignment."
"Only one description."
He enlarged the faded record.
Executive Projects Office
Samuel looked toward Arthur.
"I never knew that office existed."
Arthur answered quietly.
"Neither did I."
Margaret compared the renovation date with the timeline of Harold Bennett's resignation.
The office disappeared only six weeks after Harold left the company.
No forwarding records survived.
No inventory list existed.
No closure report had ever been filed.
Margaret slowly closed the blueprint.
"Someone didn't just remove an office."
She looked around the room.
"They removed the memory that it had ever been there."
